We are pleased to announce the publication of the catalogue accompanying the Triennial of Art and Environment EKO 8 exhibition, A Letter to the Future. The catalogue presents all 27 art projects from the triennial, 10 of which were newly created for the triennial, the installation view of the exhibition at the fascinating venue of the former MTT/Melje factory, archival footage from the factory set of a 1948 film, photo documentation of EKO 8 public programme and events and accompanying texts by the curator Alessandro Vincentelli, islandic writer Andri Snær Magnason and triennial director Simona Vidmar.
The exhibition A Letter to the Future, curated by Alessandro Vincentelli, an independent curator working between UK and Greece, thematically evolved from a memorial plaque by the people of Iceland, marking a specific moment in time and the loss of their first glacier. On the plaque they wrote a simple massage for the generations to come – we know what we have to do, only you will know if we have done it. Andri Snær Magnason, Islandic writer and author of the plaque, wrote in the catalogue: “A dying glacier is not a dramatic event. The drama of melting glacier is no more dramatic than springtime: one day there is snow and the next day it is gone. We are living through the Great Thaw, the Big Melt. We have to remind ourselves that this is not normal.” Alessandro Vincentelli is referring to this point of departure: “As part of EKO 8 exhibition A Letter to the Future is also a plea to think beyond the present. To bring together works that span generations and expand our understanding. The plaque commemorating the loss of the glacier throws us forward into the future and reminds us of our shared past.”
The catalogue was designed by Rafaela Dražić, who is also the author of the EKO 8 visual identity. Rafaela Dražić is an award-winning visual communications designer, who uses graphic design as a tool for creating and promoting the content of cultural institutions and non-governmental organizations. She received her PhD from the University of Fine Arts in Warsaw and graduated from the Department of Visual Communication Design at the University of Split (2007–2009). She has worked/collaborated with: Gallery Storefront, New York; Calvert 22 Gallery, London; Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw; Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb; Camera Austria, Graz; Venice Architecture Biennial; Nottingham Contemporary Museum; Onomatopee, Eindhoven and many others.
