Mateja Kavčič / Blossoms
UGM Šop, Strossmayerjeva 6
24 June – 24 October 2021

curator: Andreja Borin

In the sales exhibition at the UGM Shop, we present Mateja Kavčič with her original hand-coloured prints.

Mateja Kavčič has been present on the Slovenian art scene since 1994, when she graduated in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts. Nature, the artist's muse par excellence, takes on various guises in her work. It appears in round paintings with tree leaf motifs, in sophisticated portraits of individual leaves, forest images on exhibition walls, book illustrations, in situ land art interventions, gallery space installations, and small-format prints.

The small-sized imaginary blossom prints were created around 2010. The artist has cut eight basic matrices in linoleum. She printed them in different colours on rice or bamboo paper and hand painted each print with colour inks. She made 50 variants of each matrix. The prints act as rosettes or mandalas, each being inimitable and unique; they seem to pulsate in a unique and at the same time synchronous rhythm. These multi-coloured blossoms are unparalleled and are perfect little worlds. They radiate genuine joy, beauty, harmony, matchless singularity, abundance, etc. They are a kind of universal symbols, capturing the seasons and the cycles of life in their eternal natural flow.

Mateja Kavčič was born 1970 in Novo mesto. After graduating from the Ljubljana High School of Design and Photography, in 1989 she enrolled in the painting department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, where she graduated in 1994 and attended a specialist postgraduate programme in painting in the following year. In 2007, she obtained a pedagogical and andragogical education at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. Since 1995, she has been working as a freelancer in the cultural sector. She is a visual artist in the fields of painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, spatial installations, and land art. She participates in restoration projects and runs creative workshops for children. She has been living and creating in Škofja Loka for the past 18 years.
